Pittsburgh, PA: Anita Alano, 63, died on January 11, 2014, following a three-year struggle with breast cancer. Predeceased by father, Ralph Alano, and cousins Robert and Marti Ciaccia. She is survived by her loving husband, Merle Jantz; mother, Isabel Alano; brothers Louis (Theresa) and Peter (Peggy) Alano; nephew Jack and niece Bridgett Alano, and cousins Frank (Carol), Tom and Julie Ciaccia, Beth (Mark) Thomas and the Cosmo Plantone family.
A gifted and award-winning artist and educator, Anita loved animals and nature, and often used them as inspiration for her work, some of which can be viewed at:
Anita grew up in Rochester, obtained a B.A. in art education from Buffalo State University, and a Masters in painting from Rochester Institute of Technology. She taught art for 17 years for the Pittsburgh Public Schools, and continued teaching adult art classes at Community College of Allegheny County until her illness made it impossible.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., January 20, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of the South Hills, 1240 Washington Rd., Pittsburgh, PA 15228. A local memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, February 1, at Holy Cross Church, 4492 Lake Ave., Rochester, NY 14612. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Family Hospice and Palliative Care, 50 Moffett St., Pittsburgh, PA 15243.
