Gioia, Anthony John

Rochester: Died peacefully on July 29, 2013. Mr Gioia was born in Buffalo, NY to Ninetta G. and Alfonso Gioia on August 6, 1916. He is predeceased by his parents, devoted wife Gloria, and grandson, Edward John Riley, III. He is survived by beloved daughters, Gloria Harrington (Timothy) and Celia (Cici) Riley of Chagrin Falls, OH; granddaughter, Allison Riley Holmes (William) of Wayne, PA; great-grandchildren, Riley Elizabeth, Harrison Edward, and Ever Faith Holmes; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He attended Mohegan Lake Military Academy, John Marshall High School, and was a graduate of Cornell University Class of 1938. He served in the European Theatre in World War II. As a Major in the U.S. Army, he was decorated with a Bronze Star Medal and Croix de Guerre from both Belgium and Luxemburg.

Mr. Gioia was a co-founder of the Bravo Macaroni Company, serving as Vice-President and President. He was a Founding Director of the Genesee Federal Savings & Loan Association. He also served as a Trustee of the New York Bank for Savings. Locally, Mr. Gioia was a Director of the Rochester American Hockey Club (AHL) and served as a member and Chairman of both the Town of Brighton Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals. He was a member and past Governor of Oak Hill Country Club and the Genesee Valley Club.

A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, August 2, 10:30 AM at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 150 Varinna Drive, Rochester 14618. Interment at White Haven Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the Genesee Valley Club, 421 East Avenue, Rochester 14607 following the interment. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Edward John Riley, III Scholarship Fund at McQuaid Jesuit High School, 1800 South Clinton Avenue, Rochester, NY 1418.
