Penfield: Barbara Walters Voelckers passed away peacefully at home on August 3, 2014, just one day short of her 88th birthday, after a long, happy, and fulfilling life. She will be held close in our hearts forever.
Barb's family was the center of her life. She cherished being a devoted wife and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Barb had a beautiful smile; a wonderful, wry sense of humor; and a caring way about her that will be deeply missed. A gifted writer, she sent letters, cards, and "thank you" notes that would melt your heart. Barb embraced life's challenges and showed us how to live, how to love, and how to die with honesty, grace, and dignity.
Well-read and insightful, Barb enjoy following politics and current events, and loved a good book. She enjoyed pursuits big and small -- from traveling the world to tending roses to solving crossword puzzles. She was an avid golfer and treasured spending time with her dear friends at Oak Hill. She was also a terrific Bridge player and got a kick out of winning a whopping 25¢ cents with a great hand. Her greatest joy, though, was being with family. It's what mattered most.
Barb had four children, 12 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. She is survived by daughters Gwenn, Anne and her husband Rich Palumbo (children Erin and Jay), Ellen and her husband Kevin Mahoney (children Erika and Drew); and daughter-in-law Cathy Voelckers (children Jacob and Robyn Voelckers and their children Nicolas, Annelise, Carly, Isaac and Erik; Adam and Dorothy Voelckers and their children, Oliver and Ewan; Erica and Ben Jacob and their children, Grant, Peter, Nathan and Stella; April and Jason Walker, and their children Jack, Katy, Julia and Leah; Gretchen and Brady George and their children Lucy, Ruby, Hazel and Brody; Evan Voelckers and his son Ethan, Marc Voelckers, Rebecca Voelckers and her son Noah), and sister-in-law Cathy Walters.
Barb was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 4, 1926. She grew up with her parents Hazel and Warren Walters, and her brother "Bud," who was a dear and lifelong friend. Barb attended Allegheny College and graduated from the University of Iowa where she met her husband Bill Voelckers. She and Bill were married for 60 years, and lived in Port Washington, NY; Findlay, Ohio; and Rochester, NY; where Bill worked for the Eastman Kodak Company. Barb's parents, her brother, husband, and cherished son, Mark Voelckers, have preceded her in death.
The family would like to thank Barb's hospice caretakers: aid Frances Fierro and nurse Sandra Meyer-Clark from the Visiting Nurse Service for their kind and compassionate care, delivered with love, humor, and a gentle touch.
Interment will be private, in keeping with Barb's wishes.
