Holly Springs, NC: Passed away suddenly on Sunday, September 15, 2013 with his family at his side. Ernie was born in Los Angeles, CA on August 2, 1930, and grew up on the East Coast and in the Midwest. A graduate of Beloit College, he earned his Master's degree in French from the Sorbonne in Paris, France and an International Management degree from the Thunderbird School of Global Management in Arizona. Those experiences ignited his life-long passion for travel and foreign languages. He spent his career with the international division of General Motors which took him and his family to Italy, Switzerland, Zaire and Tunisia. After retiring, he spent 14 years in Rochester. He moved to North Carolina seven years ago to enjoy the warmer climate. His favorite pastimes included traveling, studying languages, entertaining friends and family, cooking and watching his grandsons' sporting events; swimming, hockey and soccer.
Ernie is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ann, and his daughters, Kirsten (Peter) Koenig of Fairport, NY; Susan (Brian) Vondette of Apex, NC; Karen (Matthew) Spitznagle of Williston, VT; his grandsons, Peter Koenig III, Andrew Koenig, Christopher Vondette, Jonathan Vondette, Alexander Spitznagle, Zachary Spitznagle, his brother Charles (Barbara) Olson; sisters Marilyn (Edward) Birchfield, and Lillian Mackal, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate Ernie's life will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2013, at 11 am at Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word, 597 East Avenue, Rochester. Those who wish may make contributions to the
or to the Lutheran Church of the Incarnate Word.
