Greenwald, Garalee H.

(Six)

Rochester: November 18, 2013. Survived by her husband Howard J. Greenwald; her son Joel Six, daughter-in-law Gayle Asuncion; and cherished grandson, Justin Six, all of Staten Island; and her son Guillaume (Will) Six and daughter-in-law Lola Jimenez Six of Rochester. Predeceased by her infant son Yvain Six. Also survived by her step-daughter Sarah Greenwald of Wilkesboro, NC and her former husband Gilles Six of Caen, France.

Garalee was born November 7, 1942 in Kalamazoo, MI, the only child of Garrett and Marie Arndt Hoppe. She grew up in Kalamazoo and in Carlsbad, CA, attended Oceanside-Carlsbad High School and graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School. She was awarded a Bachelor's degree cum laude from Kalamazoo College where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and earned a Master's degree from the University of Michigan in 1966. That year she married Gilles Six and moved to Amherst, MA. In 1971 she moved to Brockport and had lived in the Rochester area ever since. Garalee married Howard Greenwald in 1984. She was a long-time employee of Monroe County at the Department of Social Services and the Office of Probation, from which she retired as a Senior Probation Officer in 1997.

Garalee was a dedicated and knowledgeable gardener and over the years the affectionate guardian of several dogs, including her dog Peppy and her once-in-a-lifetime dog Gizmo (1984-2002). During the last years of her life, she faced both breast cancer and Parkinson's disease. She was deeply grateful for the support she received in coping with cancer from Gilda's Club of Rochester. She was blessed with a loving and compassionate family and many caring friends, including her Bridge Group and the members of the Women's Group she joined in 1983 and had met with monthly since. A commemorative gathering will be held in the spring of 2014 at a time and place to be announced. Garalee asked that contributions in her memory be made to the Rochester Civic Garden Center, 5 Castle Pk. 14620 or Gilda's Club, 255 Alexander St. 14607 or Parkinson's Support Groups of Upstate NY (www.PSGUNY.org).
