Pittsford: Died peacefully at his home, surrounded by family on February 3, 2014. John was born May 1, 1927 in Rochester, NY. He is predeceased by his parents, John and Susie Miller Rae, step-mother, Mary Lester Rae, and son-in-law Robert van der Stricht. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Frances Clarke Rae; daughters and sons-in-law, Susan van der Stricht, Robin (Dogs) Vavrina, Sara (Ed) Beale and Katherine (Clay) Phillips. He is also survived by grandchildren, John van der Stricht, Kendra Vavrina, Christopher (Nikki) Vavrina, Joshua (Kate) Beale, Daniel Beale, Dylan Phillips and Morgan Phillips; great- granddaughter, Ellie; his devoted brother, Bob (Jan) Rae, and several nieces, nephews, grand niece and grand nephews.
John attended PS 21 in the City of Rochester, the Allendale School, Deerfield Academy and Princeton University. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. After three years with the Gulf Oil Co, he returned to Rochester to run the family business, J. H. Rae Oil Co., Inc. with his brother Bob, and continued to work in the business until he retired in 2011.
John was a member of the Country Club of Rochester, the Genesee Valley Club and Hunt Hollow Ski Club. He served on several community boards, including the Al Sigl Center and the United Way.
John loved to golf, fish, sail, ski, listen to jazz, play the piano and relax by the waters of Canandaigua Lake with his family. Forever remembered will be his deft on the golf course, command of silver duct tape, speed to the cookie jar, "putzing" on any and all projects and devotion to afternoon swims in Canandaigua Lake, wit with a punch line and bountiful love for his family and friends.
The family wishes to thank all of the wonderful aides who have spent many hours with John, making his life comfortable and meaningful. You all know who you are, and we could not have gotten through this without your help.
No prior calling hours. A Mass in John's memory will be held Saturday, February 8, 2014 at 11:00 am, at St. Thomas More Church, 2617 East Ave, Rochester.
