Williamson/Great Falls, VA: Wendell John Van Lare, 69, passed away peacefully on 11 July surrounded by his beloved family. Mr Van Lare retired in 2010 as Senior Vice President/Labor Relations at Gannett Co. Inc., and a member of the Gannett Management Committee. He was born 1 March 1945 in Newark, New York, and attended State University of New York at New Paltz (B.S., 1967). In 1967 he began Albany Law School of Union University; however, he suspended his studies in 1968 to seek a commission in the U.S. Navy. After being commissioned an Ensign, he served aboard USS HANCOCK (CVA-19) during the Vietnam War. Mr Van Lare returned to Albany Law School and completed his Juris Doctorate in 1972. He was an associate at the Rochester law firm of Wiser, Shaw, Van Graafeiland, Harter & Secrest before joining the Labor Law Department of Gannett Co., Inc in 1977. He was admitted to the New York and Virginia Bars as well as the Bar of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Mr. Van Lare was an ardent supporter of the arts and opera in particular. He served as President of the Opera Theater of Rochester from 1983-1985 and upon moving to Northern Virginia, began his 28 year passion of supporting opera in the DC area. Most notably, Mr Van Lare was a champion of the Young Artists Program at the Wolf Trap Center for Performing Arts and helped to nourish the careers of over 20 singers. Also an avid collector of 17th Century Dutch art, a generous selection of Mr. Van Lare's Dutch etchings will be donated to his alma mater, SUNY New Paltz.

He is predeceased by his parents, Julian and Doris (Lacknor) Van Lare, brother Harlan and sister Gail Vanderbilt; brother-in-law, Wilson Berger. He is survived by his beloved wife of 27 years Karen (Stack); 4 children, Commander Jonathan Van Lare, USN, (Michelle DeVoogt), Andrew Giles (Carey Robinson), Allison Van Lare (Eric Yocam), and Lacey Taplin (Kevin Taplin); 6 cherished grandchildren, Julia, John, Aiden, Aubrey, Julian, and Owen; and two sisters, Felicia Payne (Burton Payne Jr) and Sheila Berger; brother-in-law, Richard Vanderbilt and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be Friday, 18 July from 6-9pm at Young Funeral Home in Williamson NY. Please join the family for a celebration service in honor of Wendell's life and influence, Saturday, 19 July at the Payne family farm, 4442 Jersey Rd in Williamson at 1pm.
