David Shelby Dale Sr.

Obituary Condolences

Lakewood, Colorado, entered into rest on February 21, 2014 at age 80. Born in Houston, Texas, March 11, 1933 to Warren Jefferson and Frances (Dohoney) Dale, he is survived by his son John J. "Jack" Dale (Carol), daughter Lucy E. Pendleton (Al), son David S. Dale, Jr. (Karin), daughter Hannah E. Tenneson, and daughter Alison Heath (Dan), along with eleven grandchildren and one great-grandson. David Dale was a proud third-generation Texas Longhorn, graduating near the top of his class from the University of Texas at Austin Law School in 1957. He worked as an oil and gas attorney with the Vinson & Elkins Law Firm in Houston throughout the 1960s before deciding to teach property and oil and gas law at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas in the early 1970s. Some of his law students would later teach his son, Jack, at Washburn Law School. David returned to practice as an 'oil man' in the 1980s, first with Conoco in Houston, Texas, then with Milestone Petroleum and Meridian Oil in Denver, Colorado. David Dale was highly respected throughout his career for his integrity and diligent work. He retired to Larkspur, Colorado in 1996 to enjoy his lifelong passions of playing and watching golf and avidly following his Texas Longhorn football team. David loved to travel the country and world with his family, showing them the beauty of our country's National Parks, and experiencing life outside of the United States. He was a loving, story-telling father who could bring tears of laughter to everyone, including himself. Ever the teacher, he left a legacy of college funding for his grandchildren, and donated his body to medical science. A celebration of his life will be held in the summer. To honor his work as an attorney and his lifelong love of dogs, his family requests that donations be made in his memory to the University of Texas at Austin or Washburn University Law School Scholarship Funds, or The Colorado Beagle Rescue Fund.
