Gene Steinke Obituary
Gene Steinke died after a brief illness, in the comfort of his family's arms. Gene was born in Wichita, KS and raised in Garden Plain. He was the youngest of six children, all who have predeceased him. He attended Wichita State for 2 1/2 years before entering The US Navy during WWII. Following his honorable discharge he enrolled at University of Denver in 1946 where he was an all-conference basketball player. He is now a member of the DU Sports Hall of Fame. Gene graduated in 1948 and was married the following year to his college sweetheart, Doris Davenport. He began working at Olinger Mortuaries in September of that year and served as a licensed funeral director and business director for many years. Gene and Doris are the parents of six children, Sharon, David, Richard, Diane, Linda and Susan. They have 15 grandchildren and one great grandson. Visitation, Monday, 5-7pm, Olinger Hampden Chapel, 8600 E. Hampden Ave. Funeral Mass, Tuesday, 10am St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 300 S. Sherman St. with reception to follow. Committal, Tuesday, 2:15pm, Fort Logan National Cemetery, area "C". Contributions may be made in Gene's memory to the DU Athletics Department, 2201 E. Asbury Ave., Rm 4674, Denver 80208 or St. Francis de Sales Church, Denver 80209.
