James Buchanan Obituary
James W. Buchanan died peacefully at home in Erie, Colorado, on November 23, 2012, after a wonderful Thanksgiving with his family. He was born April 30, 1929 in Denver to James Harry and Helen Weddle Buchanan. He graduated from Boulder High School in 1947, the University of Colorado in 1951, and the law school at the University of Michigan in 1954. He served in the Navy JAG Corps for four years, then returned to Colorado where he practiced law for over thirty years. He specialized in trial work, and was a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, the International Society of Barristers, and numerous other professional organizations. He was also an accomplished woodcarver, fly fisherman, and hunter. He wrote three books about his life experiences and friends. He married Janet Teichgraeber, on June 18, 1952 in Emporia, Kansas. Together they raised four boys, traveled the world, and participated in many community and political activities in both Colorado and Patagonia, Arizona. He is survived by his wife, Janet; sons Mark Buchanan and wife Mary of Colorado Springs; Ross Buchanan and wife Lynn Holland of Denver; Todd Buchanan and wife Lisa Lopez of Eldora; and Wade Buchanan and partner Raymond Ocasio of Denver; by grandchildren Courtney Buchanan of Hermosa Beach, California, Anthony Buchanan of Erie, Bryce Buchanan of Colorado Springs, and Monterey and Luke Buchanan, both of Denver; by his sister, Sara Porritt of Littleton, nephew Ed Porritt of Boulder, and niece Beth Roome of Littleton; and by his cousin, Bernita Blair of Denver. A memorial service is being planned for January. Condolences can be offered online at darellhowemortuary.com. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests gifts to the Bell Policy Center in Denver, Catalyst High School in Louisville, or HospiceCare of Boulder and Broomfield Counties.
