Roland Champion, affectionately known as "Champ", was born in Pekin, Illinois August 30, 1925 and died at age 87 in Littleton, CO, October 1, 2012. Champ served in the Navy from 1943-1946 and graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1947. Champ married Bette Yarger of Madill, OK. They have been married 63 years. Roland is survived by his loving wife, Bette and his children, Richard Champion (Trish) of Littleton, CO and Martha Champion (Ernie Brogmus) of San Jose, CA. He is also survived by one sister, Mary Ellen Eller of Silvis, IL. He is the proud grandfather of five grandchildren, David Phillips, Kristi Haynes (Champion), Eric Phillips, Jodee Champion and Scott Champion, along with his great grandchildren, Jackson Holynski and Evan Haynes. Champ was President of the American Association of Professional Landmen (AAPL) in 1982 and received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996. He was honored by the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation receiving the Trustee for Life designation and was recognized as Landman of the Year by the Denver Association of Petroleum Landmen. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at the Gardens at Columbine for their time and attention during Champ's last years. His funeral is planned for 10 a.m., Saturday, October 6, at Trinity Methodist Church.
