Andrew Albert "Andy" Simons, 66, passed from this life on Saturday, August 18, 2012 at the V.A. Hospital in Des Moines. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, August 24, at Assumption Catholic Church in Granger, of which he was a member. Burial will follow at Beaver Catholic Cemetery, in rural Granger.
Andy was born on November 8, 1945 in Dexter, IA, the youngest of twelve children to Edward and Mary (Scharfenkamp) Simons. In 1965, He enlisted with the U.S. Army and served during the Vietnam War. Andy was honorably discharged in 1967 and was awarded two purple hearts. On October 25, 1969, he married Letitia Irene "Tish" Giedraitis in Des Moines, and their marriage was blessed with two children, Edward Andrew and Patricia Marie. Andy was formerly employed as a painter by trade. He was a member of the Granger American Legion Post and the Paralyzed Veterans of America in Des Moines.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of nearly 43 years, Tish Simons of Granger; son, Edward "Eddie" (Donna) Simons of Granger; daughter, Patricia "Pati" (Terry) Berger of West Des Moines; eight siblings, Vincent Simons of Winterset, Bernie (Bob) Burke of Madrid, Leonard (Mary Agnes) Simons of Yale, Loraine Pauleski of Carroll, Gene (Mary Ellen) Simons of Greenfield, Edward (Margaret) Simons of Des Moines, LeRoy (JoAnne) Simons of Van Meter and Betty (Cecil) Faust of Missouri; and four grandchildren, Shea, Judd, Isabella and Kyler. Andy was preceded into eternal life by his parents; two sisters, Rita Meister and Mary Catherine Simons; and one brother, Larry Simons.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 23, at the church in Granger, where a parish vigil service will begin at 7 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made in Andy's name to either Assumption Catholic School in Granger or Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines.
