David George Puffett Sr., 87, passed away peacefully at home on November 13, 2013. He was surrounded by his loving family. David was a caring and generous husband, father, and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by many people.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 16 at Highland Park Presbyterian Church, 321 Euclid Ave., Des Moines, Iowa 50313, with burial at Chapel Hill Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa.
David had two great loves in his life: First and foremost was his love for his adoring wife of 55 years, Dorothy. Thanks to an intuitive match-maker named Mrs. Rosenberg, David and Dorothy were introduced in 1957 and ultimately shared a long happy life together as husband and wife and each other's best friend.
David's other love was music. He was an accomplished saxophone player and played in many professional, military and community bands. Notably he played for over 30 years with the Don Hoy Orchestra. David was well-known in the Iowa "Big Band" music community and was well respected for his playing talent and especially for his exceptional knowledge and understanding of music.
Of course David loved his three sons and their large extended families. He enjoyed his role as the "family patriarch" at the many family parties and dinners he attended.
He was born in Ames, Iowa and graduated from Ames High School in 1944. He served his country during WWII, then he attended Iowa State University and then graduated from the University of Iowa. He was a dedicated employee for Job Service of Iowa for 34 years. David was a member of the American Legion and VFW.
David was a sports fan and enjoyed watching the Royals, Chiefs, Cyclones and Hawkeyes on television. He enjoyed crossword puzzles and especially loved watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy with Dorothy.
He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy and three sons, David Jr. (Karen), George, Jim (Tara), grandchildren Angela (Daniel) Harless, John Puffett, Jacquelyn (Eric) Burr, great granddaughter, Ruth Harless, and brother, George (Mildred) Puffett. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Enid (Edwards) Puffett and brother, John Puffett.
The family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, November 15, at Iles Westover Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Food Bank of Iowa. Online condolences are welcome at IlesCares.com.
