Dean Downey, 91, formerly of Des Moines, passed from this life on Friday, April 18, 2014, at the Madrid Home in Madrid. Throughout his life, Dean was a very generous and giving person. In agreement with his utmost desire and wishes, his body was gifted to the Deeded Body Program at the University of Iowa for anatomical and surgical studies. A memorial graveside service celebrating Dean's life will be held at later date at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines, with military honors.

Dean was born on May 3, 1922, in Brooklyn, Iowa to Charles F. and Leo Ethel (Thomas) Downey. He served with the Army Medical Corps during WWII, and became one of the survivors of the Battle of the Bulge. On January 17, 1946, Dean was united in marriage to Louise McKeag Skidmore in Grinnell, IA, and they made their home in Des Moines for most of their married life. Dean retired from Crescent Chevrolet after many years. He was a member of the Union Park Presbyterian Church, Madrid V.F.W. Post 5060, American Legion, Masonic Lodge and the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine. Dean will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his children, Gary (Donna) Downey of West Des Moines and Gwen (Jim) Bennett of Madrid; grandchildren, Joby Bennett, Jamie (Abby) Bennett, Travis Downey, Jocie (Travis) Wunschel and Darci (Ben) Moran; step-granddaughter, Michelle (John ) Kline; and great-grandchildren, Shelton, Brody, Braeden, Cooper, Carsyn, Jeff, Preston, Addison, Jimmy, Arianna, Hannah, Harper, Rayann, Eva, Jack and Katie. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Doris Keller; four brothers including his twin at infancy, Darrell and Glen, Eugene and Gary Downey; daughter-in-law, Jane Downey and one grandson, Jeffrey Bennett. Dean was preceded into eternal life by his parents; and wife, Louise Downey.

The family has respectfully requested that any memorial contributions be made in his name to the Madrid Home.
