Donald R. Keyworth

Des Moines

Donald "Don" Roland Keyworth, 84, passed peacefully from this life on Sunday, March 23, 2014, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. In agreement with his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service celebrating Don's life will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, at Westover Baptist Church in Des Moines, where a reception for family and friends will follow the service. A private committal service will take place at a later date.

Donald was born on June 3, 1929, in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Roland and Marion (Alexander) Keyworth. He was a graduate of Central High School and University of Minnesota; and later earned his Doctorate degree from University of Ohio State. He was united in marriage to Colleen B. Christensen and they made their home in Des Moines. Don was employed as a Professor of Philosophy with Drake University for 37 years, until he retired on April 20, 1994. Following his retirement, Don continued teaching as Professor Emeritus, both honors classes and courses for the Ray Society. He served as a Board member of the Iowa Health Bio-Ethics Committee for many years. Don was a member of Westover Baptist Church, of which he served as Choir Director for 37 years and continued on as a choir member. Don greatly enjoyed time on his sailfish (which he built himself in his living room), spending most summers of his life with lots of family at their cabin on Pelican Lake in Minnesota.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Colleen Keyworth of Des Moines; three children, Brian (Susie) Keyworth of Olathe, KS, Kathleen Gibbons of Des Moines, and Bonnie Keyworth of Minneapolis, MN; two grandchildren, Alex (Laura) Keyworth and Hannah Gibbons; two step-grandchildren, Elizabeth (Jeff) Farmer and Emily Seed; one great-grandchild; eight step-great-grandchildren; and many dear nieces and nephews who were very special to him. Don was preceded into eternal life by his parents, Roland and Marion; two brothers, Bill and Bruce; and one sister, Marjorie Northrop.

The family has respectfully requested that any memorial contributions be made to Westover Baptist Church.
