Donald "Don" Toms
Donald "Don" Toms, 70, of Nevada, passed away Monday, January 28, 2013, at Story County Long Term Care in Nevada after a battle with Frontotemporal Dementia (Picks Disease).
Don was born May 11, 1942, to Clyde and Margaret (McGinnis) Toms. He graduated from Ames High School in 1960 and attended Iowa State and Luther Colleges. On June 13, 1964, he was united in marriage to Paula Griswold in Bettendorf, Iowa. Don was the IT director of the Iowa Department of Transportation for 38 years, and served as a Story County Supervisor for five years. He was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada and the Rotary Club of Nevada. He had served on the Story County Conservation Board and the Iowa Association of County Conservation Boards. Don enjoyed fishing, ISU sports and was an avid bridge player.
Don is survived by his wife, Paula of Nevada; his sons, Donald Jr. "DJ" (Chris) of Council Bluffs and Marshal (Amber) of Huxley; his daughters, Lynda (Chip) Sotolar of St. Louis, MO and Elizabeth (Mark) Cahill of Nevada; his brothers, Philip (Cheryl) of Webster, MN and David of Newport Coasta, CA; his sister, Ann Hull of Costa Mesa, CA; ten grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada (1418 Fawcett Parkway), with memorial services 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 31, 2013, at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada (701 11th Street) with Pastor David Burling officiating. Private burial will take place in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Story County Conservation or the Heartland Adult Day Center.
