Geoffrey Gaylord, 67, died September 12, 2013 at Kavanagh Hospice in Des Moines, IA. He was born October 1, 1945 at Fort Sill in Lawton, OK to Josephine and Earl Gaylord.
Geoffrey was a 1963 graduate of Alton High School in Illinois. After high school, he attended the Wharton School of Business and Commerce at the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 1967. He developed a passion for art and began attending and then graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute. It was at the Art Institute that he met and later married Judi Hein. He went on to establish a successful farrow-to-finish hog operation near New Virginia, IA that he maintained for 10 years before going back to school to earn his Master's Degree in Social Work from the University of Iowa. Geoffrey then began working for Lutheran Social Services as an in-home social worker. He later moved to Des Moines and continued working for LSS before joining Wadle & Associates (now Compass Clinical Associates) in 2004 as a clinical social worker.
Geoffrey had a great love for opera, organ music, reading, and gourmet cooking among other interests. He was a very curious person and enjoyed learning new things. He was passionate about everything he did.
Geoffrey is survived by his two sons, Graham (Kimberly) Gaylord of Des Moines, IA, Guthrie Gaylord of Urbandale, IA; his long-time friend, Jean Stuit of Urbandale, IA; his ex-wife Judi Gaylord of Urbandale, IA; three siblings, Gordon (Rhonda) Gaylord of Alton, IL, Greg (Sharon) Gaylord of Alton, IL, Janet (Frank) Brundick of St. Louis, IL; eight nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents of Alton, IL and his older sister, Jill Rainford of Chicago, IL.
Geoffrey was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church in Des Moines. He loved the music at Plymouth, particularly the organ music.
A visitation will be held Thursday, September 19 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Iles Westover Chapel. A funeral service will follow on Friday, September 20 at 1:00 p.m. at Plymouth Congregational Church, 4126 Ingersoll Ave., Des Moines, IA 50312.
