Gerald G. Kephart
Gerald G. Kephart of Des Moines died Thursday at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. The body was cremated and a celebration of life service will be announced and held at a later time.
Jerry was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on February 14, 1932. He had lived in Des Moines since 1958 and was involved with the food business for many years.
Jerry entered business as a junior high school student in Minneapolis, when the owner of a neighborhood grocery store hired him to clean the store and make deliveries. In the 1950's, Jerry served in the U.S. Army in Korea. Returning to Minnesota, he worked briefly in the construction industry. He launched his food business career with Gedney Pickle Company of Chaska, Minnesota. He then established his own brokerage business and later worked with Faribault Foods, Inc.
Jerry was a Master Gardener of Iowa, member of the Iowa Audubon Society, and heavily involved in the Variety Club of Iowa. For many years, Jerry coordinated the Chili Cook-Off contest at the Iowa State Fair. He took great pride in this family's farm in Southern Iowa, caring for its land and landscaping.
He is survived by his sons, Steven, of Des Moines, and David, of Hermosa Beach, California. He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Egly Kephart.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Variety Club of Iowa.
