H. Allen Handford
H. Allen Handford, 82, of Hummelstown, passed away Wednesday, February 27, 2013, in his home.
Born in Des Moines, IA on July 1, 1930, he was the son of the late Harvey E. and Lenore Allen Handford.
Allen retired as a child psychiatrist and educator. He was a 1953 graduate of Harvard University, and continued his education at the University of Iowa, graduating in 1957. Allen then interned at Broadlawns, Des Moines, and continued his child psychiatry fellowship at St. Christopher's Hospital, Philadelphia. He then became part of a private practice in Villanova and the Director of Research for the Autistic Children Unit at Eastern State School and Hospital, Philadelphia. Allen also became the Director of Children & Youth Mental Programs for the PA Department of Public Welfare for several years. Allen was also an educator at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, and the College of Medicine at Penn State University, Hershey.
He was involved in many associations and organizations in furthering the knowledge and treatment of psychiatric disorders.
Allen was preceded in death by his wife, Laura J. Diller Handford; and an infant daughter, Alice Faith Handford.
He is survived by a son, Lee A. Handford husband of Mary of Norfolk, VA; two daughters, Christiana H. D'Adamo wife of Arthur of North Wales, and Jennifer M. Lutton wife of Paul of Langhorne; two sisters, Kaye Hanna of Burlington, IA, and Eleanor Berney of Rochester, NH; and five grandchildren.
A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in the Hershey Cemetery.
