Major Henry J. Boccella
Major Henry J. Boccella, 93, of Des Moines died peacefully in bed at Calvin Community on Sunday, September 1, 2013. He was born January 4, 1920 in Wilmington, DE, the second of the six children of Felix and Rose Marie (Cresta) Boccella.
Henry was a career Army officer who was stationed at Hickman Field, HI when Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941 and served until retirement in 1965. He then worked for the Natural Disaster Services Office of the State of Iowa coordinating with local governments the placement of Tornado Warning Systems, retiring again in 1982. Henry was a 1949 graduate of Penn State University with a B.S. Degree in forestry. This led to a lifelong interest in landscaping. As a gun collector, he enjoyed hunting and target shooting and was a member of the National Rifleman's Association. He and his wife, Mary, were members of Holy Trinity Catholic Church for over 50 years.
Henry was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Alice in 2011. He is survived by his children, John (Betty), Rose (Don Rohde) and David; grandchildren, Jenn and Hana; and great-granddaughter, Riana.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, September 4 at Iles Funeral Homes - Westover Chapel. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, September 5 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will be 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
