Herb Bennett, 85, passed away October 10, 2013 at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, IA. A visitation will be held at Gilbert Lutheran Church on Sunday, October 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will be Monday, October 14 at 11 a.m. at Gilbert Lutheran Church.
Herb was born June 29, 1928 in Gilbert to Floyd and Leora Bennett. He lived most of his life in Gilbert from which he graduated high school in 1946. After graduation he went to electronic school in Omaha, NE. He then joined the Coast Guard in 1949, serving in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1952. Herb retired from the National Animal Disease Lab in 1990 after working there 34 years as an electrician.
Herb married Izetta Hill from Huxley on November 8, 1952. They were married for more than 60 years.
Herb is survived by his wife, Izetta, and four children, Steve, of Ames; Lori (Tom) Valline, of Ankeny; Mark (Lori), of White Oak; and Gary (Amy), of Blue Springs, MO; one sister, Lois (Ken) Kemmerer, of Gilbert; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grand children.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Clifford and George; and two grandchildren, Christopher and Monica Valline.
Herb was a member of the Moose Lodge, Gilbert Fire Department, City Council, Church Council, President of the Triple G Square Dance Club, Lions Club Member and an active member of the Gilbert Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Suburban Coffee Club, a group of guys who are always trying to solve world problems. Herb was recently honored by the city of Gilbert with the Citizen of the Year Award for 2013, which pleased him very much.
Memorial contributions in Herb's memory may be made to Gilbert Lutheran Church or Israel Family Hospice House.
