Jeannette Mary Brush of Des Moines died January 14, 2013 at Taylor House.
Jeannette was born on June 18, 1918 to George Cutter and Leila Frances (Shaffer) Brush of Oak
Park, IL. Jeannette was baptized and confirmed in the Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church in Oak Park. She attended elementary, middle and high school in Oak Park, graduating in 1936. Jeannette graduated from Drake University in 1940 with a BA in Arts and Sciences. She worked in the Chicago area and was a stenographer for the U. S. Army War Bond Office in Chicago before enlisting in the Navy in November of 1943. She worked for the Navy Weather Center in Washington, D.C. and attained the rank of Aerographer's Mate Second Class, V-10, USNR. She was honorably discharged in December of 1945. Jeannette worked as a meteorological aide for the U. S. Department of Commerce Weather Bureau at Boeing Field in Seattle, WA. until September of 1949. She then attended the University of Washington earning her teaching degree in 1950. She earned her Master Degree in Librarianship from the University of Denver in 1955. Jeannette taught in Elma, Tacoma and Spokane, WA. for fourteen years, one year in Portland, OR. and four years at the University of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff.
In 1969, she accepted a librarian position for the city of Phoenix and later applied for the Arizona Room position which she retained until her retirement in 1987. Jeannette enjoyed reading, traveling, swimming, sewing and working with her students. In the Arizona Room, it was her pleasure to work with authors when they researched to obtain accurate history facts to incorporate into their stories. In 1999, she moved to Palm Harbor, FL. to be closer to her brother, George and his wife, Jeane with whom she traveled extensively. She was a member of the Toastmasters, Tampa Bay Culinary Club, VFW and Mid-Florida Gulf Coast Chapter of Military Officers. In 2006, she moved to Des Moines to be near family.
Surviving family includes her sister-in-law, Jeane Brush of Des Moines; niece Brooksie Miller and husband, Doug of Maxwell, IA.; nephew Iven Brush and wife, Gail of Des Moines; nephew Carl Brush of Des Moines; Maureen Brush (wife of George L.) of Elkhorn, NE. Ten great-nieces and nephews along with nineteen great-great-nieces and nephews survive her. Preceding her in death were her parents, George C. and Leila her brother, George S.; one niece, Binnie Brush; one nephew, George L. Brush; and one great-great-nephew, Isaac Robert Miller.
Burial with military rites accorded will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D. C. Memorials may be directed to the Salvation Army or VFW in honor of Jeannette.
