Joel D. Teigland M.D.

Bigfork, MN

Joel David Teigland, age 92, of Bigfork, MN, died of pulmonary fibrosis on Sunday, November 17, 2013, at his daughter's home in Minnetonka, MN. He was born on September 29, 1921, in Randall, IA, son of Soren and Bertha (Erickson) Teigland.

Joel attended St. Olaf College and Iowa State University prior to graduating from the University of Iowa Medical School in 1945. He married Florence (Flo) M. Henryson (whom he met in first grade) on December 22, 1943. The couple built a cabin in northern Minnesota in 1946 while waiting for Army orders. Joel served stateside in the U.S. Army in a V.A. hospital in Indiana after completing his internship in Duluth. They moved from Indiana to Milwaukee, WI, where Joel completed a residency in Internal Medicine and training in Allergy. They settled in Des Moines, IA in 1954 and there they raised their five children. Joel practiced Allergy in Des Moines and treated thousands of patients until his retirement in 1986. He and Flo were active and faithful members of St. John's Lutheran Church. In their life together, Joel and Flo traveled the world, forged lasting friendships, and shared their lives and love with many people.

Joel enjoyed numerous hobbies including hunting (and hunting dogs), fishing, gardening, woodworking, golf, traveling, and photography. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family at his home in Mesa, AZ, in the sunshine of Sanibel Island, FL, and at the cabin in northern Minnesota. Joel was a strong and devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle, and he was an inspiration to his entire family. Joel and Flo were honored to be thought of as "adopted" parents and grandparents to a number of younger friends and relatives. Joel was a kind and loyal friend to many and treasured staying in touch until his final days. His generosity, work ethic, integrity, and his deliberate way of living are part of a memorable legacy.

Joel is survived by children Bruce Teigland (partner Karen Bollinger) of Coralville, IA, Joan Peterson (Paul) of Albia, IA, Jean Teigland (Russ Felkey) of Minnetonka, MN, Ellen Teigland (Charlie Schweigert) of Grand Rapids, MN, and Betsy Teigland (Peter Narum) of Madison, WI; twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother M.B. (Teg) Teigland of Miami Shores, FL. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Florence, grandson, Stefan Narum, and daughter-in-law, Kathy Teigland.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 7, at 1:00 pm at Windsor Heights Lutheran Church, 1240 66th Street, Windsor Heights, IA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Community Church in Bigfork, MN, the Salvation Army, or Habitat for Humanity.
