Naples, FL and Des Moines
John Marshall Gregg of Naples, Florida and Des Moines, Iowa passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2014, in Naples, with his daughter, Barbara, by his side. John was born on June 29, 1917 to the late John and Mary Gregg of Chicago, Illinois. He attended Tilden Technical High School and the Illinois Institute of Technology where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering. John spent his entire career in the printing industry. He began that career in 1935 as a packer boy at R.R Donnelley & Sons Company in Chicago. His tenure there was interrupted by his service as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army where he served in the European theater during World War II. It was in the midst of this service that John married the love of his life, Norma Beverly Cameron, on September 8, 1943. John returned to R.R. Donnelley at the conclusion of the war and from 1960-1964 he worked for Condé Nast in Old Greenwich, Connecticut. In 1964 he and his family moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where he concluded his 47-year printing career working at Meredith Corporation. While at Meredith, John was instrumental in the formation of Meredith-Burda Corporation, where he served as president from1969 until 1975. John retired from Meredith Corporation in 1982 as its printing group president. John was fully engaged in life for each of his 96 years. He was an avid golfer and loved reading to school children in Naples elementary schools. Prior to his retirement, it was important to him to shake the hand of every Meredith and Meredith-Burda printing employee each holiday season. Most recently, he enjoyed helping organize several Meredith-Burda reunions, the most recent of which was in the fall of 2013. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Norma, his parents, his sister, Jean (Paul) Kemp and other beloved sisters- and brothers-in-law.
