Joseph L. Smith


Joseph Lawrence Smith, 72, passed away peacefully at his home in Ames, Iowa, on December 23, 2013.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Friday December 27, 2013 at Our Lady's Immaculate Heart Church, with a burial to follow at Ankeny Memorial Gardens.

A visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 26, 2013, at Memorial Services of Iowa - 4208 N Ankeny Blvd.

Joseph was born October 9, 1941, in Britt, Iowa, to Lawrence and Bridget (Nolan) Smith. After graduating from Bishop Garrigan High School in 1959, Joseph went on to serve honorably in the United States Navy. After serving his country he graduated from Hamilton Business College in Mason City. He pursued a career in banking for 30 years, later serving as Vice President of Ames Savings & Loan. While his proudest accomplishment were being a loving husband to Nancy for 47 years and raising four wonderful children, he also enjoyed working as a realtor for Hunziker and Associates for the last 20 years.

Joseph was a loving, caring husband, parent, grandparent, brother and friend. He enjoyed ISU wrestling and being one of the original members of the Cyclone Wrestling Club. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

Joseph was survived by his 4 children; Kendra, Larry (Susan), Bradley (Cristina) and Sheila (James), 6 grandchildren; Savanah, Paris, Peyton, Saffire, Gabriella, and Shanel, brothers; Chuck and Steve, Sisters; Barb, Helen and Berniece as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Nancy, his mother, father, and his sister Noreen. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Smith Family for distribution to organizations special to Joe.
