Lawrence E. "Larry" Pope
Lawrence Edgar Pope, 73, died of renal cancer Wednesday May 22nd in Des Moines, IA. Born February 29, 1940, he died shortly after his 18th official birthday.
A native of Des Moines, Larry graduated from Roosevelt High School (1958), and earned his bachelor and J.D. degrees from Drake University on the same day in 1967. He worked for Legal Aid for a year before moving with his wife, Dianne, to New York City where he attended graduate law school at New York University, receiving an LL.M. in Labor Law in 1969.
That fall, at the University of Akron Law School, his teaching career began.
The Popes returned to Des Moines in 1973, where Larry served as Professor of Law at Drake University Law School until his retirement in 2008. He specialized in labor law and constitutional law, teaching approximately 4,000 law students in his nearly 40 year career.
He was Of Counsel with the Belin McCormick Law Firm, and a two-term legislator in the Iowa House of Representatives, serving as the youngest majority leader in IA history in 1982. From 1992 to 2012 he served as legislative counsel representing clients before the Iowa Legislature.
Whether dealing with students, clients, constituents, colleagues, or legislators, Larry was honest, straightforward, pragmatic, optimistic, and encouraging. He believed in the two-party system, the give-and-take of our constitutional political process, and that given enough time and well-informed people the majority would reach a reasonable solution.
Larry loved IA, Dianne, military history, the Chicago Cubs, the political process, and golf. He understood history and knew that what happened in the past could be used as a foundation to solve today's problems. In his last days, realizing he would die without seeing the Cubs win the World Series, he speculated that perhaps he was "the famous curse" and his Cubs would probably win next year.
Survivors include his wife, Dianne Mahloch Pope, of Des Moines; his sister, Barbara Pope Smith (James Maxon), of CO; nephew, Jeffrey Alan Smith and family in AZ; niece, Lynn Smith Gilbride and family in PA; brother-in-law, Hugo Mahloch, Jr. (Christine) of Onawa, and family, and sisters-in-law Kathleen Mahloch Nevins (Gavin Nevins), FL, and family, and Nancy Mahloch Pflager (Richard Pflager) of MN.
The funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday May 28, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 15 Indianola Rd., in Des Moines. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 27, followed by a vigil service at Iles Funeral Home - Dunn's Chapel.
Memorial contributions in the name of Larry Pope may be mailed to the Iowa Oncology Research Association, 300 E. Locust, Des Moines, IA 50309.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Robert Shreck, nurse Katie, and Dr. Robert Behrens.
