Lowell Hammond passed away Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 88. A memorial service with Masonic and Military honors will be held Monday, February 11, at 10:30 a.m. at Peterson Funeral Home in Carlisle, Iowa. There will be a luncheon following Memorial Services at the Community United Presbyterian Church of Hartford.

Lowell was born in Grand River, Iowa on January 6, 1925 to George Alvah and Laura Harrington Hammond. As a young man Lowell moved to Des Moines, Iowa where he worked for the Lone Tree Service Station until he was drafted into the Army during World War II. Lowell served on the European front from 1943 until 1946. After the war Lowell returned home where he met and married Gertrude (Trudy) Gracy of Indianola, Iowa. They had one child, daughter Alana Lee. Lowell and Trudy moved to Hartford, Iowa where he became a building contractor. Over the next several years he built many homes in Hartford and the surrounding area. Lowell was a member of Community United Presbyterian Church and also a 50 year member of Hartford Masonic Lodge #83.

Lowell is survived by sisters Edith Wood of Greybull, Wyoming, Gertrude LaVone Hargis of Hartford, Iowa, Lottie and Betty Hammond of Hartford, Iowa, and brothers Bill Hammond of Hartford, Iowa and Gerald Hammond of Hartford, Iowa. Lowell also left behind two granddaughters Rhonda Hall (Jeff) of Calgary, Canada and Rhedda Foreman of Colbert, Oklahoma, 7 great-grandchildren, Stephanie Nichole Albright (Tim), Ashley Christine Pardue (Daniel), Jordan Matthew Thomas Bishop, Justin Caleb Bishop, Page Nikcole Miller, Kristen LeeAnn Richardson, Hailee Dawn Navarrette, and 4 great-grandchildren, Katie, Leah and Harper Albright and Davin Blaine Bruner. Lowell was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Trudy, daughter Alana Simerson Englutt, and brothers Audie and Tom Hammond.
