formerly of Boone, Iowa

A hand-stitched message hangs on her wall at home. It reads, "He who laughs, lasts!". That message describes exactly how she lived her life.

Marie Elzada Seymour Crandell of Ames, Iowa formerly of Boone, Iowa passed away Friday morning at the Story County Medical Center in Nevada, Iowa at the age of 94.

Marie was born on July 20, 1920 in Fraser, Iowa the daughter of William and Ada (Isaacson) Seymour. She attended grade school in Fraser and graduated from Boone High School in 1938. Marie then entered nursing school at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, graduating in 1942. Earlier that same year, she had joined the Red Cross Student Reserve, knowing that when she graduated, she'd be prepared to join the Army. Marie became a U.S. Army nurse, serving 16 months in England during WWII.

After her discharge from the Army, as a 1st Lieutenant in December, 1945, she worked at the Greene County Hospital in Jefferson, Iowa and then the Boone County Hospital in Boone. On June 30, 1946, Marie married one of her former army patients, Hubert Crandell. They lived in Jefferson, Iowa for several years, then moved back to Fraser with their three young sons. Marie worked in Boone as a nurse, for both Dr. Putenney and Dr. Neil Johnson and worked for many years in Dr. John Wall's office, until finally retiring from nursing. During that time period, the family had moved from Fraser to Boone to be closer to their work. She and her husband, Hubert, moved to Ames in 1996.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband Hubert in January of 2013; her parents, Willie and Ada Seymour; and her brother, William Seymour.
