Mary Jo Leseney
Mary Jo Leseney, 89, died Friday, September 20, 2013 at Calvin Community. Burial will take place 9:30 a.m., Thursday, September 26, 2013 at Masonic Cemetery. A Memorial Service will follow at 10:30 a.m. at Calvin Community.
Mary Jo was born March 1, 1924 in Des Moines to Roy and Minnie (Schicker) Chamberlain. She was a lifelong resident of Des Moines and retired as a secretary with the Des Moines Police Department in 1978 after 31 years of service.
Mary Jo was an accomplished musician and played the piano and organ at many area hospitals, care centers and retirement homes. She played at Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Mercy Hospital, Urbandale Health Care Center, Bishop Drumm Care Center, Calvin Manor, 3801 Grand, Illahee Hills, and Wesley Adult Day Center. Mary Jo was invited to play at the Governor's Conference on Aging. She was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church, Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, Iowa State Police Officers Association, Des Moines Police Burial Association and Iowa Chief of Police Association.
Survivors include her son, James L. (Melinda) Leseney of Des Moines; grandson, Vincent (Mandy) Leseney of Norman, OK; great grandson, Alex Leseney. Mary Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth E. Leseney in 1991.
Mary Jo was very fond of animals and in her memory memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Rescue League.
