Mary Winter died quietly on March 30, 2013 in Ames, IA. She was born April 18, 1940 in Minneapolis, MN. Mary received her elementary education from the public schools in Redwood Falls, MN. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota and graduate degrees from the Pennsylvania State University. Between her bachelor's and master's degrees she worked as a home economist in Minnesota. After graduate work she worked as a professor at Cornell University and at Iowa State University.
She became famous as a teacher and a researcher in the field of household resource management. She was appointed Associate Dean of her college in charge of Research Administration. She retired as Emeritus Professor from Iowa State Universuty in 2005.
Because of her university roles and her natural gregariousness she was known to have a friend every thirty miles along the U.S. highways in the middle-west and maybe the whole country. She is survived by her husband, numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews and four stepchildren. A secular celebration of her life will be held in her barn at 17830 550th Avenue, Ames, IA 50010 at 11 a.m. April 5, 2013. There will be food, music, and conversation.
