Maryellen Reese Johnson, 93, died Monday, May 6, 2013 at Trinity Center at Luther Park in Des Moines, Iowa. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, May 9, 2013 at Hamilton's near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave. in Des Moines, with burial following at Pine Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at the funeral home.
Maryellen was born March 16, 1920 in Stuart, IA, to James Guy and Betty Pease Reese. She graduated from East High School in Des Moines. Maryellen was a Marine Veteran of World War II. She was a Charter Member of the Women's Auxiliary of Boline-Manfredi VFW Post 9662, and a Life Member of the Women Marines Association. After the war she was Des Moines Fire Department Chief Slade's secretary. On February 18, 1950, she married William Johnson in Osceola, IA. For several years, she worked in the law offices of James Hall and Robert Hall. In retirement, she worked part-time for Hamilton's Funeral Home. She resided in Des Moines and was a member of the Marquisville United Methodist Church.
Maryellen is survived by her sons Bill Johnson and wife Lois, Jim Johnson, Paul Johnson, and Fred Johnson and Sherry Witt; sisters Elaine Reese, Phyllis Frisk, Doris Reese, and Lois Charter; brother Guy Reese and wife Marilyn; sisters-in-law June Reese, Pauline Reese, and Ruth Reese; and grandchildren Katie Coon and husband Nathan Coon, and Will Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents; her father and mother-in-law Oscar Clarence and Mary Gladys Johnson; brothers Jim Reese, Bill Reese, and John Reese; sister-in-law Verda Collins and husband John Collins; and brothers-in-law Bob Frisk and Bobbie Charter.
Memorial contributions may be made to Marquisville United Methodist Church in loving memory of Maryellen.
