Merle C. Bengtson, 91, of Boone passed away at Courtyard Terrace in Boone on Thursday evening, August 1, 2013 where the couple has resided for the past few years.

He was born on August 16, 1921 in Boxholm, Iowa the son of R.F. and Elizabeth (McComb) Bengtson.

On September 7, 1946, he married Loretta Nelson at Boone, Iowa.

Merle graduated from Boxholm High School in 1939. He enlisted in the US Army in September of 1942 and attended Stanford University. He was then sent to the South Pacific during WWII and served as an amphibian tractor commander in the Palau Islands and later in Okinawa and Iheya Shima. Merle left the South Pacific by ship on Christmas Eve December 1945 and arrived home on January 19, 1946. He farmed in Boone County his entire life after WWII. Merle enjoyed fishing, horseback riding and attending all his grandchildren's activities.

He was a member of the Augustana Lutheran Church, American Legion, Boone County Cattlemen's Association, Boone Saddle Club, and Boone County Farm Bureau. Merle had previously served on the Board of Directors for the Greene County REC, Boone COOP Elevator and Boone County Extension.

His parents, brother Waldo, and sister Beverly preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Loretta; two daughters Barb Weigel and husband Steve and Patti Chesnut and husband Scott all of Boone; five grandchildren Jessica Loecke and husband Matt of Ames, Iowa, Alex Weigel and wife Lindsay of Altoona, Iowa, Justin Chesnut and wife Amy of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Michael Chesnut and wife Kristin of Altoona, Iowa and Kyle Chesnut and wife Ellen of Boone; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother Dick Bengtson and wife Bonnie of Waukee, Iowa; a sister-in-law Marie Bengtson of Boxholm, Iowa; brother-in-laws Kenneth Nelson of Mt. Home, Arkansas and Richard Nelson of Plano, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held on Monday morning, August 5th at 10 a.m. at the Augustana Lutheran Church in Boone with Pastor Dan Solomon officiating.

Interment with full military honor conducted by the Boone Veterans Council will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.

Friends may call at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone on Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. with the family present during that time to greet friends. Visitation will continue prior to the service on Monday morning at the Church from 8:30 a.m. until the time of service.

In memory of Merle, memorials may be directed to the Augustana Lutheran Church in Boone.
