Nancy C. Davis

Des Moines

Nancy C. Davis, 74, died March 12, 2013 after more than a decade long struggle with breast cancer. She was born to George H. and Pearl Davis of Birmingham, Alabama on February 27, 1939. At the age of 24, she became a permanent resident of Des Moines after accepting a graphic design position with LOOK Magazine. Upon LOOK's demise in 1971, she went to work for Meredith Corp. in the Circulation Creative Services Department where she served as senior designer, then art director and eventually associate creative director prior to retirement in 2001. Nancy's expertise in direct mail was instrumental in launching a dozen magazine titles for Meredith over the years, but her favorite role was that of teaching and mentoring talented staff designers and celebrating their successes.

After retirement and a few more years freelancing from home, Nancy decided to pack up her motor home and join the migration of like-minded snowbirds in search of warmer climates to escape Iowa's long, cold winters. Her destination of choice became Laughlin, Nevada year after year.

Throughout her life, Nancy enjoyed a variety of activities. She loved fishing, the outdoors, camping and the fellowship that came from meeting lasting friends all across the USA. She cherished her family, her friends, her rescued doges and her home. Being an avid reader, Nancy was never without a book. Her other interests included movies, wildlife, dining out, golf (when younger), cards, art, travel, board games that involved strategic thinking and her latest (and possibly greatest) passion was paying cash games and tournament poker, both in homes and at casinos.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an older brother, George H. Davis, Jr. She is survived by her older sister, Mary Lou Clayton of Birmingham, AL; her younger brother, Larry (Darlene) Davis of Blountsville, AL; sister-in-law, Carolyn Davis of Pinson, AL; five nieces, three nephews and her dearest, lovable friend, Sharon Wilhelm of Des Moines and Sharon's three sisters, Kelly, Cindy and Lori whom Nancy considered to be part of her extended family.

Following cremation, a private burial will be at Glendale Cemetery. A celebration of her life will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 19 at Brooks Funeral Care, 7975 University Blvd. in Clive.
