Patricia Ann Rehder, 73, of Windsor Heights died of complications from congestive heart failure Saturday, January 4, 2014.
Born and raised on a farm near Waukon, Iowa, she was a graduate of Waukon High School. She earned degrees from Drake University and the University of Iowa.
Pat was a professional librarian in the Des Moines and West Des Moines systems. She was the first director of the Pleasant Hill Public Library. She was known particularly for her innovative children's programming.
She was active in music and service programs at Grace Lutheran Church, Des Moines, for more than 50 years. She volunteered at a local food pantry and community center. Pat greatly enjoyed cooking and entertaining friends and family. Pat was proud to be a twenty-year survivor of breast cancer.
She was a volunteer with Lutheran Disaster Response in Biloxi MS following Hurricane Katrina and also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in Lake Charles LA following Hurricane Rita.
In 2000 Pat volunteered as a librarian at Tumaini University in Iringa, Tanzania. She made three mission trips to Tanzania and helped begin a companion congregation relationship with a Lutheran parish in the Pare Mountains near Mt. Kilimanjaro. She also did mission work in Mexico and Costa Rica.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Alphild O'Brien of Waukon. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Denny; two daughters, Kathleen (Kurt) Bowermaster of Des Moines and Jennifer of Athens GA; a granddaughter, Kelley (George) Marks of Des Moines; a sister, Colleen (Ron) Randel of Overton TX; and a brother, Daniel (Liz) O'Brien of Springfield IL; plus several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Friday, January 10, at Grace Lutheran Church, 52nd & Urbandale Avenue, Des Moines, at 2 p.m. with a dessert reception to follow. Memorials should be directed to Grace Lutheran Church.
