Ralph Leonard, Jr.


Ralph, 87, died July 8 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m., Friday, at Merle Hay Funeral Home, with a Graveside Service at 2 p.m. at Chapel Hill Gardens.

Ralph Leonard, Jr., the son of Ralph Leonard, Sr. and Maggie (Thorn) Leonard, was born October 26, 1926 in rural Grimes, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Ralph was united in marriage with Virginia Mae Young on December 31, 1945. He was a longtime landscape nurseryman, and retired from Heard Gardens in 1991.

Ralph is remembered by his loving wife, Virginia; his children: Kathy Weldon, Kerry Leonard, Kristine Phipps, and Ralph Leonard III; seven grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and siblings: Juanita Wright, Robert Leonard, and Jean Howell. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Connie Marie Leonard; and three brothers and four sisters.
