Richard Daniel Smith, 85 of Nevada died on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, November 25 in the First United Methodist Church, 1036 K Avenue in Nevada with Pastor Chris Waddle officiating. Burial will follow in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery.

Dick was born on May 8, 1928 in Mills County, Iowa to Benjamin H. and Ora B. (Sullivan) Smith. He graduated from Malvern High School. Dick served in the U.S. Army as a radio operator during the Korean Conflict. On December 19, 1953, Dick was united in marriage to Naomi E. Smith. He graduated from Northwest Missouri State College in 1957. Dick was employed in materials and research for the DOT for 30 years. In retirement he worked part-time for various farmers. Dick was a long time member of the United Methodist Church. He was a choir member, worked at the county fair food stand, served as a lay member to the Annual Conference and a Food at First volunteer. Dick was very active in the Girl Scouts and served as camping services chair, product sales chair, and vice president of Moingona Girl Scout Council. He was a member of the Lions Club and was an eye tissue driver and worked with the recycling program. Dick was an Iowa Public TV volunteer and delivered Meals on Wheels. He enjoyed travel, ham radio, cards and genealogy.

Dick is survived by daughters, Debra D. Smith of Nashville, TN and Rebecca Smith (David) Lekwa of Nevada; two grandchildren, Lt. Daniel Lekwa currently serving in Afghanistan and Christopher Lekwa of Nevada; a sister Alice M. (Harold) Sharpnack of Huxley; many nieces and nephews.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Naomi on August 7, 2012, siblings Daisy Aileen, Walter Noel and Sylvia Josephine.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 24 from 2-4:00 p.m. at the Chet Ryan Mortuary, 708 Fifth Street in Nevada.

Memorials may be directed in loving memory of Dick for the UMC Nevada Food at First Fund and the Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa for Camp Sacajawea..

Dick has requested no neck ties be worn at the service.

His grandson Daniel has arranged for a flag to be flown at Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan to honor Dick.
