Robert G. Dickinson

West Des Moines

Robert Goodell Dickinson, 88, of West Des Moines, Iowa passed away peacefully at home on August 7, 2014. Robert was born on September 7, 1925 in Grundy Center, Iowa to Ruie Goodell Dickinson. Bob or "R.G." as his close friends called him, was a long time resident of Des Moines and a winter resident of Naples, Florida for 33 years.

After graduating from Grundy Center High School, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1943. He spent three years in the Marine Corps - with part of his time stationed in the Peleliu Islands. Upon returning from service he attended Drake University thereafter transferring to and graduating from the University of Iowa. While at the University of Iowa he met his love and wife, Sally Pinkerton of St. Louis, Missouri. During his time at the University of Iowa Bob became a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity.

He was the founder and President of R.G. Dickinson & Co., a brokerage firm based in Des Moines with offices across the U.S., and the former partner of Aspen Financial Group of West Des Moines, Iowa.

He began his 63 year career working for a local brokerage firm, before deciding to start his own firm, R.G. Dickinson & Co. He grew R.G. Dickinson & Co. from a one-man operation into a nationally recognized brokerage firm with 33 offices in more than 9 states.

During his days at R.G. Dickinson & Co. he sat on the Board of Governors of the National Association of Securities Dealers and was a member of the New York Board of Trade, the Chicago Board of Trade, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the Chicago Board of Options Exchange. He was a former president for the Iowa Bankers Association and sat on the board of directors for several local and national companies.

He loved his family, the state of Iowa, playing golf and spending time with his grandson, Scott, and enjoying the comfort of his home. Bob was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church, the Jesters, the Des Moines Club, Des Moines Golf & Country Club, and the Pelican Bay Club.

He had such a deep love for home and family. He was a generous and loyal man who spent many days playing with his grandson and helping people out whenever necessary. He had an infectious laugh and a kind heart. He will be forever missed.

He is survived by his daughter, Debora Sue Dickinson, of Chicago, his grandson, Scott Dickinson (Zeana) McMillen of Burr Ridge, IL, his great grandson, Braydon Dickinson McMillen and his future great grand-daughter also of Burr Ridge, IL. During his last days and months Bob and his family were grateful for the care provided by Willie and Lori Taylor - who helped him live his final days in the comfort of his favorite place - his home.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Sally Dickinson, his son, Robert Stephen Dickinson, and his brother, William J. Dickinson, and his dear friend, Coach Johnny Orr, who always made him laugh.

Visitation will be at Iles Dunn's Chapel from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, August 11. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 12 at Dunn's Chapel followed by entombment at Resthaven Mausoleum. Memorial contributions in Robert's memory may be directed to the Des Moines Golf and Country Club Education Foundation.
