Robert John Beals
Robert John Beals, 86, passed away peacefully on Tuesday June 10, 2014, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. The family will greet friends from 1:30 - 3 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel followed by a funeral service at 3 p.m. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.
Born on the family farm in Newton IA, Bob (then known as Robbie) attended school in Colfax and helped with the farm. At age 17, he left home and joined the US Navy to serve in World War II. During the war he served in the Pacific on the A.M. Engle, C.G.M. Minesweeper and was discharged in 1947. Upon returning to the Des Moines area, he met and married June Lavon Lowe in 1950. Bob worked as a Tool and Dye Specialist for John Deere for 30+ years, during time which he also farmed at their home in Runnells, IA and built fencing throughout the area. After retiring from both John Deere and farming he continued building fence and picked up water softener installation to keep him busy. Bob was a hardworking man that enjoyed telling stories and just having some fun.
He was preceded in death by his wife June, and is survived and lovingly remembered by his children Diana Archer of West Des Moines; Mark (Debbie) Beals of Aloha, OR; Connie (Frank) Healy of Spring Hill, KS; and John (Janice) Beals of Des Moines; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and his sister Edith (Leo) Letterman of Madison, MO.
