He began his private practice in Grinnell in 1960, in association with Dr. Frank Molsberry. Later he was joined in practice by Dr. Robert Agnew. Dr. Edwin (Neil) Cochran joined this association several years later. He was very proud of his final associate: his son, Dr. Scott Baumann. He was blessed with a great and caring staff and retired after fifty years in practice.

During his career he enjoyed advancing his own and others' education. He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Miriam; sons, Kent (Stephanie) Baumann, Scott (Delphina) Baumann, Craig (Ann) Baumann, and Mark Baumann; daughter, Julie; eleven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and his brother William (Dianne) Baumann MD.
