Roger Shields, 85, died Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at Hospice of Central Iowa Kavanagh House in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 4, at the First Presbyterian Church in Dallas Center, of which he was a life-long member. Burial will follow at Brethren Cemetery there.

Roger was born on November 28, 1928, in Dallas Center, to Claude and Lulu (Chartier) Shields. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. Roger was married to Jeanne Badger and they made their home in Dallas Center. He owned and operated R & S Garage in Dallas Center and worked for the US Postal Service retiring as a rural mail carrier. Roger was a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge, served as mayor of Dallas Center, Scout Master and Scout Leader for many years and as the Commander of the Dallas Center American Legion Post #49 for 20 years.

Roger is survived by his wife, Jeanne of Dallas Center, his children, Jerry (Eileen) Shields of Dallas Center, Steven (Sue) Shields of St. Paul, MN, Sherre Edmondson of Perry, and David (Sheryl) Shields of Dallas Center; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Dale and Russell Shields and his sister Eileen Hawbaker.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 8 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Dallas Center. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post #49 or the First Presbyterian Church in Dallas Center. Online condolences will be welcomed at
