Ronald H. "Ronnie" Gass

Des Moines

Ronald H. "Ronnie" Gass, 88, passed away on Thursday, June 5 (his mother's birthday) at the Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston. He was born May 8, 1926 on a farm near Melcher, IA to Fred and Esther (Smith) Gass. He was a graduate of Melcher High School. Ronnie was an army veteran of World War II and one of five brothers serving at the same time. The five brothers participated in one of the Honor Flights to Washington D.C.

Ronnie retired from the U. S. F. & G. Insurance Company. After retirement Ronnie was a volunteer at the Bishop Drumm Care Center along with two of his brothers. He was a member of the American Legion Post 663 and St. Theresa Catholic Church where he also spent many hours volunteering. He enjoyed playing golf, watching sports on TV and working the Jumble and Sudoku in the daily newspaper.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Margaret (Conrad) Gass; son, Douglas (Debbie) Gass of Rockford, IL; daughter, Christine (Rob) Embree of Urbandale; three brothers, Wayne Gass of Urbandale, Darrell Gass of Des Moines, and twin brother, Roger (Martha) Gass of Urbandale; two sisters, Shirley (Dennis) Hurley and Margie Pope both of Des Moines; and three grandchildren, Rachael and Sarah Gass and Austin Embree. Ronnie was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Warren; and sisters-in law, Margaret Gass and Neva Gass.

Visitation will be at St. Theresa Catholic Church from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 9 with a 7 p.m. Vigil Service. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 10 at the church followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery.
