Susan Garland, R.N., M.S.
An icon of Vacaville passed away on January 15, 2014. Susan Ann Garland was born in Iowa to Shirley (Scott) and Jack Garland. Susan graduated from East High School in 1971. She earned her Master's Degree at the University of Iowa. She was director of the Burn Unit at University of Iowa when Alta Bates Hospital, Berkeley, CA recruited her to be Burn Unit Director in 1982. She earned her Bachelors of Science from Marycrest College in Davenport. She married Mark A. Smith, R.Ph. that year and relocated to California. Northbay Healthcare hired her in 1986 and she was Director of Nurses at VacaValley Hospital when it opened, hiring many of its nurses and managers. Susan proudly served on Vacaville Community Services and Library Commissions. Other accomplishments include; Executive Director at Woodland Healthcare, Redesign Education Manager Mercy Healthcare, Principal manager of CCS and CHDP, Solano County, Director of Patient Care Services at Shriners Hospital for Children, Sacramento, Rumsey Indian Rancheria, and Case Manager at U.C. Davis.
Susan is survived by her mother, Shirley Nordmark; step-father, Dr. Boyd; spouse, Mark Smith; daughter, Megan; son, Nathan; grandson, Gavyn; sister, Nancy Martinez; nieces, Kim and Kamea; nephews, Scott and Alejandro; brother, Ken Garland and their families.
