William E. Grafton, Sr., 84, of Des Moines died January 21, 2013 at HCI Bright Kavanagh House Hospice. Services will be 1 p.m. Friday, January 25 at St. Joseph Catholic Church of which he was a member. Burial will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Bill was born on August 15, 1928 in Des Moines to the late Thomas and Mabel (Rinerson) Grafton. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He owned J and B Auto Body before he began working as a welder for John Deere Manufacturing. He transferred to the Davenport John Deere plant in 1974 and, after retirement in 1992, moved to DeSoto where he helped manufacture Ultralight planes. Bill returned to Des Moines after his wife, Pauline's, death in 2004. Bill was a member of UAW Local 281 in Davenport. He enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time with his family. His children remember him as the "greatest dad ever."

Those left to cherish Bill's memory include his seven children, Diana Steward of Des Moines, Debra (Delbert) Pierson of DeSoto, Linda (Rich) Ross of Carlisle, Michael (Patty) Grafton, Mark Grafton, Robert (Davey) Grafton and Sandra Grafton (Geno Noble), all of Des Moines; daughters-in-law, Dian Grafton of Rhodes and Karleen Franklin of Des Moines; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; four siblings, Joe Grafton, Helen Koski and Gracie Doolittle of Rockaway Beach, MO and Richard (Nancy) Grafton of Des Moines; and companion, Shirley Lenan of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline; son, William, Jr.; granddaughter, Ashley Grafton; and three siblings, Virginia, Austin and Tony Grafton.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, January 24 at Iles Funeral Homes-Grandview Park Chapel where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church.
