Claus Hauer Obituary

Claus Hauer
1949 ~ 2014
Major Claus Hauer (Ret), 65, died December 2, 2014, in a tragic helicopter crash in Salt Lake City, Utah, with his friend and business partner, Bruce Orr. Claus was born in Berlin, Germany to Werner Hauer and Ruth Herrmann. Claus married his eternal companion, Donna Guzman, on May 5, 1973, in Agana, Guam. His many varied interests and talents led to a fulfilling life in both work and play. After enlisting in the Navy and working as a surgical technician, he found his lifelong passion in Aviation. The US Army offered him the opportunity to fix and fly helicopters and sent him, Donna, and family to many theaters throughout the world. Claus had an infectious personality, was fearlessly sociable, and had a very giving soul that touched the lives of all who knew him. He loved Golf and sought out courses everywhere he went. He loved anything in the outdoors or high-adventure activities. He often fell asleep watching sports of any kind on TV. He took pride in his work and believed if a job was worth doing, it was worth doing right. Claus and Donna recently returned from a successful and rewarding mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in El Paso, Texas. Claus held many titles and accomplished much in this life: Respected Son, Loyal Husband, Admired Father, Grandpa, Eagle Scout, Elder, Bishop, Missionary, Master's Degree Recipient, Teacher, Decorated Soldier-Major (R), Accomplished Pilot, and Friend. Claus was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth Herrmann. Claus is survived by his father, Werner (Anna Marie), siblings Carola and Thomas (Theresa), wife, Donna, children, Jason (Jesyca), Christopher (Pamela), Katherine (Jerry), Matthew, and Jennifer (Michael), and 13 grandchildren. A viewing will take place at the LDS church at 8060 S. 615 E., Sandy, Utah, on Saturday, December 6th, from 9:00 am - 10:45 am with a memorial service beginning at 11:00 am. Burial services will be held Monday, December 8th, at 12:00 pm, at the Veterans Memorial Park, Bluffdale, Utah. www.goffmortuary.com

Athens High School classmates of Claus have been trying to locate him for decades. We were so saddened as we searched for classmates in preparation for our 50th class reunion next year and found this obituary. Claus was not a student in our district for very long, but he immediately fit right in and was loved by all. We are so sad that he is no longer living on this Earth, but also happy that he had such a good and fulfilling life. Our condolences to the family. Athens High School Class of 1968

I was very sad to hear this about Brother Hauer. He was my bishop when I was a teenager when he was stationed at Ft. Campbell, Ky.
I have very fond memories of him and his family and would like to express my condolences to his family.

I can only say that this man is amazing, with every thread of his being, he will be blessed. I remember sitting in the hallway of the church waiting for the bishop, and he came up to me and introduced himself and we started talking about his career….I had so many conversations with him about Alaska, and his flying, and if I could share my stories with you on this board, it would be a novel. The lord needed another man of his stature and by goodness, he got it! He is always so bright and cheery and happy……and he always made me smile!!!!

I was in Claus's ward years ago and he was the Sunday School teacher. He was entertaining, spiritual and just great to be around. One thing he always did when ending a lesson was to ask: So what? That has always left an impression on me and I've gained SO much more perspective in my learning, and have since tried to incorporate that into my lessons. Rest in peace Claus. Thoughts and prayers to your family, neighbors and loved ones. You will be dearly missed.

We originally met Brother Hauer while he was on his mission in El Paso. He and his wife were the most amazing people and so supportive of our family during a tough deployment. They are true Angels. I pray his family will find peace in knowing that he is well loved and will not be forgotten.

My first memopry of Claus was at a youth water skiing activity at Perry Lake, KS. He helped several young people get up for their first time. He bought an older boat that gave him a little trouble, and he borrowed our boat to take a foreign officer to the lake. Claus was pulled up on two skis and dropped one. The fellow took the boat off across the lake and when they got back to look for the ski they couldn't find it. Claus felt very badly and wanted to buy me a new set of skis. We shared the cost of a modest slalom ski instead. He was always very caring and encouraging, a great person and friend.

It's still so hard for me to think that Claus is gone, he had an indomitable spirit and seemed so invincible to me...we worked together in church while he was the bishop and he made all of our callings fun and enjoyable just because of who he was. I will miss him and I send my heartfelt condolences and love to his wonderful family and especially to Donna, his ever faithful companion. I wish I could be there to give you a HUG...may our Heavenly Father give you Peace & Comfort during this very difficult time!! You are in our prayers!!! We love you!!!

Jason, Jes, kids, and all the Hauer family, please know of our love and prayers for all of you. I only had the privilege of meeting Claus once, but I knew immediately where Jason got his integrity and charm from. My flight into Utah doesn't arrive until Saturday evening or I'd be right there with you. What a blessing our knowledge of the gospel is at times such as these. May you experience the peace that passes all understanding.

remembering Claus during our stay in Saudi Arabia...Claus..truly a great example to all especially to his family and friends..You should have heard him as well and 79 other LDS Brothers and Sisters singing "I have been given much" the Thanksgiving celebration that the resident 101s Chaplin set up for all the religious denominations there...you should have been there after the song could hear a pin drop...I would think mainly because of Claus. Singing away..."The Mormon Aviation LDS Choir" All these years I have tears in my eyes when we sing this song at times...in Church now more so... We love you Claus..May God bless you and your Family...

A bit of a father-figure to me while we were both stationed in Germany, Claus was there for many important days. He set me apart as an elder in Hanau, and saw me out of the army, and onto my mission 20 years ago. Goodbye to a great soldier and friend.
