1921 ~ 2013
Ernest George Nichols of American Fork, Utah, died July 13, 2013 at the age of 92. He was born on May 22, 1921, in South Salt Lake, Utah, to Ernest R Nichols and Caroline Edith George. He was the oldest of four boys born to this union. He lived in Midvale for a short period then moved to Bingham Canyon, Utah because his father worked at the Bingham Copper Mine later known as Kennecott. He attended school at Bingham and Copperton, graduating from Bingham High School in 1941.
A short time after World War II began he joined the U. S. Coast Guard. He served in Santa Cruz on beach patrol, San Francisco aboard the ship U.S.S. Tacoma, Patrol Frigate #3 and in the Aleution Islands eventually turning their ship over to the Russians on the Lend Lease program.
After being discharged, he worked at Kennecott until 1981 when he retired. Earlier he attended the U. of U. on the G. I. Bill of Rights, graduating in 1965.
He married Maurine Russon in August of 1944 in San Francisco, later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. To this union was born three daughters; Diane (Vaughn) Densley, Patsy (David) Steadman, Colleen (David) Taylor, and presently has 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
The gospel of Jesus Christ was always very dear to him. He served in many callings in the wards where he lived. He also served with his wife as missionaries in the Australia Perth Mission, in the Church Membership Department in Salt Lake, as temple workers in the Provo Temple, and as Extraction Directors in the Salem Utah Stake.
While growing up he loved sports and also the Boy Scout program. He lived the Scout Law through out his life. He was especially trustworthy, loyal, helpful, clean, and reverent.
He is survived by his three daughters and their families and his brother Leslie (Kay) Nichols.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, Robert (Betty) Nichols and Clyde (Faye) Nichols.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at 12:00 Noon in the Lehi City Cemetery, 1100 North 400 East. A viewing will be held Tuesday evening from 7-9:00 p.m. at Wing Mortuary, 118 East Main, Lehi, Utah and one hour prior at the Mortuary. Online guest book at wingmortuary.com.
