John Edwin Meyers Obituary
John Edwin Meyers, MD
1929 ~ 2012
John Edwin Meyers, MD passed away on Oct. 23, 2012. He is survived by his loving and caring wife, Susan Neal Meyers, his three children John Kim Meyers, MD, Tony Meyers, Rebecka Meyers, MD, and their mother Louise Beck Nerney. He has six grandchildren: Andrea, John, Michelle, Madison, Matt, and Savanna.
Dr. Meyers was born 1929 and raised in Lehi, Utah. After serving an LDS Mission in Australia, he graduated from BYU with a degree in chemistry, and then with honors from University of Utah School of Medicine in 1958.
Dr. Meyers had an illustrious military career. Following an early stint in the Navy, he became a Flight Surgeon in the Air Force, and retired from the California Air National Guard as a Brigadier General after 39 years of service.
His medical specialties were Aerospace Medicine, and later Occupational and Preventive Medicine. In this specialty he worked for US Steel, IBM, as Chief Medical Officer for Southern Pacific Railroad, and retired from NASA in 2009. For a period of time he had a private practice in his birthplace, Lehi, UT. Following 50 years of medical practice, he continued to volunteer his services at the Good Samaritan medical clinic in San Mateo, CA.
John was an athlete. He was a four sport letterman at Lehi High School, was state tennis champion, and state record holder in high jump. He lettered in basketball, track, and tennis in college, and received a basketball scholarship to the University of Utah. He continued as an avid tennis player and skier throughout his life, and his children continue his love of sport. Fishing held a special place for Dr. Meyers, whether deep water, or in the mountain streams of Montana. Golf was always pulling him, and he played regularly, and well.
He had a beautiful voice, spent time with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and impromptu singing was frequently enjoyed. Most of all he loved to travel- with the military, with his family, and dancing with his wife Susan- he visited 50 states and 70 countries. Dr. Meyers loved to fly, and as a Flight Surgeon he flew in 27 different military aircraft. He loved flying backseat in our nation's fighter aircraft. He has now flown to a new destination, and we wish him Godspeed.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, November 3, 2012 at Sneider & Sullivan & O'Connell's, 977 S. El Camino Real, San Mateo, CA. 94402. (650) 343-1804. A remembrance service will follow in Lehi, Utah next spring, Memorial Day, 2013.
