Melvin Farnsworth Hase Obituary
Melvin Farnsworth Hase
1929 ~ 2014
Murray, UT-Melvin (Mel) Farnsworth Hase, loving husband, dad and grandpa passed away in his home surrounded by his family on January 23, 2014 at 84 years of age.
Mel loved life and had many interests and hobbies. He was a gifted artist. He painted portraits, landscapes, and figures using a variety of mediums, but he particularly loved to paint in oils and watercolors. He won many awards for his artwork. This love of art and his creative spirit led him to explore many artistic hobbies, including photography, calligraphy, jewelry-making, wood carving, flute making, fly tying and playing guitar.
Mel had a love of the outdoors, particularly the Uintah Mountains. He would never pass up an opportunity to go fishing. Mel's three daughters can all bait a hook, clean a fish and tie a fly. (His son can too.) Camping trips were a family favorite. His outdoor hobbies included rock hounding, deer hunting, canoeing in his homemade canoe, kite making, and of course fishing.
Mel's biggest hobby was his family. He enjoyed traveling with his wife Lorna and was always ready and willing to go anywhere and visit new places. He and his wife took many trips to visit their far-flung family and they particularly enjoyed cruising.
Mel was gentle and loving. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and he loved the gospel and served in many callings throughout his life. He quietly shared his testimony of the gospel by the way he lived.
Mel was born on December 6, 1929 in Riverside, CA to Roxana Farnsworth and Grover Hase. He grew up in the Salt Lake area and graduated from West High School. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He later graduated from the University of Utah where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. This led to his career as a commercial artist and technical illustrator. Mel was married to Lorna Burke on August 14th, 1957 in the Salt Lake Temple. They raised four children together.
Mel is survived by his wife, Lorna Burke Hase; his daughter, Marianne Fitzgerald, (Garff), Highland, UT; Kathleen Jensen (Brad), Lafayette, CA; Aileen Hase, Erie, CO; Michael Burke Hase (Merci), Huntington Beach, CA and his thirteen grandchildren.
