Merrill J. Smith Obituary
Nov. 24, 1926 - Aug. 27, 2013
Kearns, UT-Merrill J Smith was born on 24 November 1926 to Farres and Leona Smith. He grew up in Bennion, Utah and attended Granite High School. His family owned a nursery business and Merrill spent many hours budding and taking care of the fruit trees.
Merrill met his sweetheart, Luella Collett on a blind date. They were married on 7 July 1950. They loved to travel, which included many fishing trips to Yellowstone and Flaming Gorge. Always together, Merrill passed away just 28 days after his sweetheart and eternal companion. He truly couldn't live another day without her. Prior to their passing, they celebrated 63 wonderful years of marriage.
Merrill proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean War and had many stories about his experiences. He then worked for over 30 years and retired from Amoco Oil Company. He was always a hard worker and was passionate about his job.
Merrill loved to tell stories, make crafts, play card games, watch western movies and the Utah Jazz, listen to the Bees on the radio, and complete word searches. Merrill collected hundreds of baseball caps throughout the years.
He was a very proud Grandpa and loved his three great-granddaughters.
Merrill is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lu; sons, Richard and Martin; his sister, Arlene; and brothers, Dean, Carvell and James.
Merrill is survived by his daughter, Diane and son-in-law, Steve; Grandchildren, Jason & Karlie Parry, Fort Lewis, Washington; Trevor & Amy Parry, Columbus, Ohio; Lindsey & Benjamin Weber, Bismark, North Dakota; Morgan & Spencer Heywood, Kearns, Utah; and his little sweethearts, Ava & Savannah Parry and Josslyn Parry.
Services will be held on Saturday, 31 August 2013 at 12 noon at Memorial Mortuary, 5850 South 900 East in Murray. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the services at the mortuary.
Merrill will be laid to rest next to his sweetheart at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East 10600 South in Sandy following the services.
A special Thank You to Megan, Mikey, and Brighton Hospice for taking such good care of Merrill during his last few weeks.
"Grandpa, thank you for the memories"
