1924 - 2014 Obituary Condolences
January 22, 1924 - May 3, 2014
Our loving brother, uncle and friend Orville "Woody" Woodland passed away Saturday, May 3, 2014 at the age of 90, in his home of over 40 years in Fruit Heights, Utah. He was born January 22, 1924 in Brigham City, Utah to Thomas Clifford Woodland and Maria May Perry Woodland. He married his sweetheart Donna Reeve in February 1943. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had been a temple worker and sealer in the Ogden and Bountiful Temple for over 40 years. Orville entered the Aviation Cadet Program for the United States Air Force in June 1943 with basic training in Kearns, Utah and after being classified as a Navigator Cadet trained in Santa Ana, California and had advanced training in Hondo, Texas. Following graduation he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in June 1944. He graduated 1st in his class and was retained as an instructor at the navigation school. He shared his talent and skills with others in the service of his country while serving in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam. He flew over 55 combat missions over North Korea alone. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force and was a veteran of three wars plus the Congo Operations. He was highly decorated receiving over thirty awards including the Distinguished Flying Cross, three Air Medals, for combat in Korea, and the Bronze Star.
His beloved wife, Donna accompanied him to his stateside assignments and both tours in Turkey. She passed away September 1996. Although they were never blessed with children, Orville was "Grandpa" to neighbors and friends and a wonderful Uncle. He is survived by his two brothers, Clifford Perry Woodland, Perry, Utah; and Marlin P. Woodland, Kearns, Utah and his 15 nieces and nephews. Orville was preceded in death by his parents, wife and brother, Duane Woodland.
The family would like to thank Gary and Lisa Larson and their family for their watchful care and love of Uncle Orville for many years. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
