Richard Joseph Smith Sr. Obituary
1918 ~ 2013
Our husband and father, Richard Joseph Smith, Sr., 95 years old, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2013 at 12:05 a.m. at the Salt Lake City VA Hospital from a very fast-growing cancer. He will be sadly missed by us and all who knew him.
"I was born March 5, 1918, in Hartford City, IN, the son of Denise Hambenne Smith and Perle B. Smith. I attended St. John Catholic grade school, and graduated from the Fairmount, IN high school graduating class of 1936. I was on the varsity basketball team, tennis team, and participated in the Senior Stage Play. I was a World War II Veteran, serving four years in the U.S. Army European Theater, Tech 4 - Ft. Knox, Kentucky, with General Patton in Indio, California. I served in England, North Africa and Italy in Sherman tanks. I was Honorably Discharged October 5, 1945.
I married "Sally" Parr in Mishawaka, Indiana February 19, 1949. We had four wonderful sons, Michael, Patrick, Jeffrey, and Richard, Jr.. I worked for Montgomery Ward for 20 years, serving as Manager of seven stores and Home Office assignments ,which included frequent trips to New York buying markets. I retired in 1988. I enjoyed golf, fishing and playing Bridge with great friends.
I was a Life Member of Elks Lodge #291 in Vincennes, IN, Founding Member of American Legion Post #313 in Fairmount, IN, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Kiwanis Club, and was a Kentucky Colonel.
I am survived by my wife, Sally, sons Michael, Jeffrey and Richard, Jr., all of West Jordan, UT., and preceded in death by my parents, son Patrick, and my sister Jane Smith Iliff.
Time to say adieu now. I had lots of great memories, and much love to all. I loved everyone so much and enjoyed all of our time together. My Dearest Wife, Sally, was the tops. Maybe some day we will all meet again. Do you think that's possible? I hope so. Okay, bye now, and my love, Dad."
"O-O-O-Daddy-O", we know that once again you are full of "pee and vinegar", laughing and joking, enjoying a breaded pork tenderloin sandwich "with pickle, onion, and mustard only", pickled pigs feet, jowl bacon, vinegar and oil salad, and are fishing, playing golf, and having unending grand slams playing Bridge. We will always remember you, love you, and miss you, "luck-butt". X-O-X-O-X-O.
A viewing will be held from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday July 9, 2013, at Goff Mortuary, 8090 South State Street, Midvale, Utah. A private interment at the West Jordan City Cemetery will be held Wednesday, July 10, with Pallbearers Greg Hedstrom and his son, Jason Hedstrom, family friends. A celebratory Mass will be held at St. Joseph The Worker Catholic Church, on Monday, July 15, 2013, at 9:00 a.m.
